A solo exhibition of photography and film to coincide with the Turner Prize arriving in Middlesbrough.
We are delighted to invite you to visit our forthcoming solo exhibition by Key Howard titled From the Transitory featuring photography and film work by this Saltburn based artist. The exhibition will open with a celebration on Friday 18th September from 6-8pm and all are welcome. It will continue until 24th December. The exhibition forms part of a wider programme of activities across the Tees Valley that mark the arrival of the prestigious Turner Prize in Middlesbrough and which highlight the wealth of creative talent to be found in the Tees Valley.
Kev Howard will be familiar to many living in the North East as a photographer and musician who has been part of the cultural life of our area for over 40 years. This exhibition marks his first major solo show incorporating new work and key moments from his archive of images dating back to the 1980s. Many of these images have never been shown before.
New works made specifically for this exhibition are drawn from Kev’s ongoing series in which fruit and vegetables are photographed through ice. This creates beautiful, seemingly abstract, images which nonetheless tell a story of food poverty and the interruption of supply chains. All the food used in this series was found to be mouldy or rotten by the time it had reached the supermarket shelves. Works drawn from his d-FORMED series which challenge often held opinions about the disabled body and disability equipment.
Alongside his studio based work, Kev has been a dedicated documentor of the cultural lives and landscapes of Teesside. The exhibition will include around twenty of his documentary images, covering music festivals, art events, goth culture, protest marches and our lives during the Covid pandemic. His landscape images will present us with often familiar scenes shown in a different light, where waves crash and storm clouds gather and expose the sublime in the nature around us.
